The process for creating recycled messenger bags goes a little like this: First, we sort plastic bags, banners, and feed bags by color and texture. We then flatten the bags and get rid of as many wrinkles as possible. Then we fuse 7 layers of plastic together with a heat press or iron. To make sure the heat source does not directly touch the plastic and melt it, we used parchment paper as a barrier between the iron and recycled messenger bag material. The parchment paper can be used over and over again and easily peels off of the recycled messenger bag material. We then trim the panels for the recycled messenger bags and cut out the pattern pieces. Once that is done, we sew the pieces together in a specific order and Voila! a Sara Bella* Upcycled recycled messenger bag is born.
What makes a Recycled Messenger Bag Better?
Did you know that only 33% of all waste created in the United States gets recycled? 33% is better than nothing, but it also valuable to note that with recycling, there is actually still a carbon footprint being created due to the fact that energy is required to break down the materials and re-purpose them for something else. This is the exact reason we enjoy upcycling! With upcycling you’re using an existing material and transforming it into a more valuable product with minimal energy used. Sara Bella* Upcycled’s recycled messenger bags are made from at least 95% recycled materials. The hardware is the only new material.
